Soulmates are two people who's souls are bound together, whether they like it or not. Not much is explained as to why the whole "Soulmate" idea even exists, but for every person out there, there is that one other person who's soul they are drawn to. You can live your entire life without ever meeting your soulmate, but once you do meet them, you will feel drawn to them. The Soulmate princple is strong and can transends through lifetimes, and nothing is known to be able to break that bond. No magic can stop the souls from being bound together, and even with death, there is no breaking it.
In the books it was starting to appear that the night people were finding their soulmates in humans, which was referred to as the "Old Powers rising." It's somewhat similar in this game, with the idea that for a long period of time, millennia actually, night world people would find their soulmate within their own race, same with humans. However at the beginning of this game, the night people are beginning to find their soulmate in humans and vice versa (though it still isn't common). It proves as a threat to exposure and many will fight it.
Your soulmate could be your best friend, your worst enemy, or even a complete stranger living on the opposite side of the world. Nobody knows who their soulmate is before hand, it is always a shock (and sometimes not so much of a shock, but still) when they find them. When you do find your Soulmate, you will know, but it will require actual touch for the souls to recognize each other.
There is no way to really "find" your soulmate, unless you're a vampire who is in love with an Old Soul that is born into life over and over. Most people may never find their soulmate and go on living their lives just as anyone else would. They may feel a little incomplete, but that is often waved off as just everyday doubts and feras.
Touch. A graze of the hand, a vampire bite, a hug. Skin to skin contact is required for the souls to know see each other. And then it's an instantaneous moment which can be like a blue spark, a silver string tying the two souls together or even a psychic connection that neither can really control through a kiss or a vampire bite. Once it happens, the two people will feel a strange familiarity with each other, even if they've never met each other before, and from then on, they know. Some try to fight it and end up leaving, while others accept it and embrace the idea. Either way, once you meet your soulmate, it is very hard to live without them.
Made vampires are not supposed to have souls, well, according to the books at least, but even then, it's surprising to find that even made vampires can find their soulmate. Somehow the soul that has left is still able to connect through the body of the made vampire to it's other half. So yes, people without souls (made vampires) can in fact find their soulmate still.
Well, firstly, you'll be probably be connected psychically. You'll know each others thoughts and be able to sense their emotions before anyone else can. Even if you never met them before, it doesn't take long for the two of you to know everything about each other. That is of course if you stay together, but the gnawing feeling the happens when you are separated after you find out your soulmates is often too much for people to bear.
Unless he or she are an old soul and you're a vampire (or viceversa), there is no one else. It sucks honestly, and you will live the rest of your life knowing that a piece of you is gone. It'll be an empty void that no one can fill, not even if you meet another person almost exactly like them.
A soulmate is not required for the characters in the game, in fact it is discouraged to have every character you play (if you play multiple ones) to be in a plot like that. Though it's fun to play out, there is a degree of realism we like to keep, and if everyone is finding their soulmate at the same exact time it's ridiculous. Take that into consideration if you want to plot our your characters. There are other plots for your character to take part in that doesn't involve them having to find their soulmate.
Finding your soulmate is an extremely rare occurance and it is less likely to happen than not finding them at all. A majority of people never find their soulmate and finding your soulmate outside of your species is less likely to occur than finding it within.
Soulmates are allowed in the game, but it is not required at the beginning of the game. It's fun to play out and with teenagers it adds a good amount of depth and drama to the plots. It evolves the story in many ways, and there is usually conflict that arises too. Just don't go crazy with it.
