VAMPIRE PROFILE Name: Jonathan Bradley
Personality: Jonathan is, quite simply, a nice guy--at least, that's what most people see. It's not a facade per se, as he truly does enjoy helping people carry heavy objects or tutoring them in Latin. He often appears confused and daydreamy, and those are not fake traits either. However, when he's around people he doesn't like (usually people who think too highly of themselves, or those who bully the weak), his warm smile freezes and his slightly embarrassed chuckle becomes a smirk of disdain. He is quite intelligent, but his willingness to patiently teach others changes into acerbic, dry wit when he's annoyed. He's rarely paying enough attention to get upset at anyone, though, as he usually seems to be staring at the ceiling or sky and muttering quietly to himself (generally, he's translating his thoughts into Latin, although he may also be planning world domination or wondering how to get to his next class). He also has a surprising--for someone of his naturally gentle disposition--way of luring female humans to be his meal that borders on the manipulative. He otherwise seems unaware of his sex appeal. Appearance: At first glance, Jonathan's eyes are ice blue and piercing behind the glasses he sometimes wears purely for aesthetics (they make him feel "scholarly," he claims). As he turns his head and the light catches his eyes, though, they have colored flecks similar to opals, mixing yellows, greens, and reds in with his usual blue. His hair is dirty blond and too long to be called neat, yet not long enough to be tidily controlled with a band. It is slightly mussed and swept toward the left side of his head. Tall and lean, Jonathan is 6'2" and does not appear strong or athletic. If you catch him without a shirt (which is quite easy, seeing as how swim meets are not normally conducted fully clothed), he actually has sculpted abs and broad, muscled shoulders. Strengths: Jonathan is very intelligent, and gets high grades in school; he is especially good at Latin and Math. He's skilled at "talking" his way out of things by seeming confused or innocent--different people probably have different views on how often it's real and how often it's an act, and he certainly isn't telling. He's also good at getting people to talk to him about their problems, and he almost always genuinely wants to help them come up with a solution. This is a facet of his skill at manipulation; he only needs a twinge of his vampiric powers, and the rest is him and his adorable smile. He's not as strong as some of his fellow vampires, but what he lacks in physical strength he makes up for in stamina and dexterity. This helps him immensely in his position on the boys swim team. Weaknesses: The obvious, as a lamia vampire: wood and fire. He usually simply avoids them, though, and it doesn't come up often. More obviously, he is a horrible artist. Horrible. He wasn't paying attention when he registered for classes, which is nothing new for him, and somehow ended up in Painting. This basically means that all the paint is on him instead of the canvas by the end of the class, and there's always specks of dried, bright paint on his uniform, face, hands, and hair. His family is used to him getting covered with things like paint and dirt, although how someone with preternatural grace can be so clumsy with liquids is beyond all reasoning. He's also terrible with directions, and will occasionally end up in the wrong classroom, or the wrong building entirely. He carries a worn map of the campus in his back pocket, but he often forgets it's there and just wanders around until he finds his destination or someone points him int he right direction. Some people (his family included) think he has a problem saying "No" when other people ask for help, but Jonathan doesn't agree. History: Despite being a vampire, Jonathan's life has been unremarkable. Born to two lamia vampires in Fairfield County, Connecticut, Jonathan grew up knowing his family and race's histories and taking them for granted. Since vampiric goings-on were a daily occurrence, he sought excitement elsewhere, mostly in novels. He would walk around the house or through town with his nose in a book, stumbling over curbs and walking into lamp posts. Later, he learned the proper times when and when not to read, but he replaced the books with daydreams about their contents, with much the same result. However, over the years, he realized that if people think he's not paying attention they say important things in front of him. So, while he does still tend to daydream and wander into random locations . . . sometimes it's an act to get into the right place at the right time. Of course, this would be very difficult to prove . . . His parents are both good-natured, and although they are old-money and continue to make more through smart investments, they show no signs of snobbery. Jonathan has picked up their acceptance of all people--rich, poor, vampire, human--and is kind to everyone. It is hard to be completely free from the rich-kid games of Fairfield County, though, and he has a streak of the ability to manipulate that the region is famous for. His little sister Maria can be a bit full of herself, but since she looks up to her older brother, usually it takes only a pointed look from him to get her to stop. Jonathan is subtly protective of his sister, and while nothing he ever does is outright aggressive, he is perfectly willing to step forward and make his disapproval known when he thinks someone is threatening her. He's never been one for a lot of chatter, although he likes to be around other people. He usually just sits and listens, smiling softly, occasionally throwing out a historical fact, mathemathical formula, or personal opinion which may or may not be relevant to the conversation at hand. He has also spent a lot of time in one-on-one situations with his friends (and sometimes mere acquaintances), helping them through personal life trauma. Since he enjoys helping other people like that as much as he enjoys studying Latin, he's torn between becoming a therapist and becoming a scholar. He plans to take Psychology next semester to see if he's any good at combining the science with intuition and hopefully figure out his plans for the future. Although his expensive prep school was an adequate challenge academically, his parents were worried about the possibility Jonathan's vampiric nature would one day cause trouble. They spoke to some of their upper crust friends and got glowing recommendations for Ashwood Academy. Of course Jonathan was consulted, but this was not one of the rare times Jonathan decided to personally invite conflict. He just smiled, said he didn't care where he studied as long as they had a Latin program and the opportunity for advanced math, and went upstairs to start arranging his book collection for traveling. |
