Humans are well...humans! You can be killed by pretty much almost anything, you're weaker than shape shifters and vampires, and you don't have the longevity that witches do. But there are specific human groups that you need to be aware of. That is why this page exists. If you are a human and you want to eventually become a vampire in the game, you need to read through the Vampire Section before you start to plot.
Now that we have that cleared up, okay. There are three groups of humans that are make them different than just your average one. They are Old Souls, Psychics, and Hunters. These three groups of humans are different because they have a little bit of supernatural in them, but not a whole lot. Let's go!
Old Souls | Psychics | Hunters | Racial Relations | In Game
Old Souls
Old Souls are basically humans who have been reincarnated over and over. Many people who gain all their memories can have memories that go farther back than what we call civilization. A majority of Old Souls do not remember everything and some don't remember their past lives at all. However, knowledge from the past does manifest itself through the person, usually leaving them wondering how they knew that particular information anyway. Only humans can be Old Souls, no Witch or Shape Shifter can be for reasons unknown, and when a person is made into a Vampire they technically lose their soul, so it can never be reborn. Lamia are also unable to be Old Souls.
Old Souls in GameThere will only be two Old Soul available in the game since they aren't too common and it is basically up for any human position available. Whether it be a student or a teacher is entirely up to the person who makes the character. Being an Old Soul does not make you a super power but your character may recognize or remember particularly old vampires that they may have met in their past.
Psychics
In the Night World series, Psychics were essentially "lost" witches, basically witches who were lost to the line but still carried blood of the witch. Now in this game, we're going to change things around a bit (remember how I mentioned that before?). In this game, being a psychic is basically an unexplained genetic phenomena. Nobody knows the source or how one becomes a psychic. Not a clear age as to when psychics start to manifest their power can be pinpointed, some as young as five years old have shown psychic ability.
Types of PsychicsTelepaths This type of psychic basically has the ability to read the mind of others. A majority of the time it is uncontrolled. This type of gene mutation is rare and those that do have it are usually hospitalized as being paranoid schizophrenic. Telepaths have the ability to control what they hear, but it takes years of training. TelekineticsThis is the most common type of genetic mutation that leads to psychic power. Telekinesis is the ability to move objects with your mind. More often than not it is triggered by strong emotions and it is much easier to tame than any other psychic ability. It is also the most favored and the least unpredictable, since it is more controlled by emotion. PyrokineticsThese are psychics with the ability to create fire, usually instingated by violent emotions of anger. This is another rare case and not fondly looked on due to the unpredictable nature of it. Learning to control the fire is diffcult and some pyrokinetics have been rumored to have spontaneously combusted. |
Psychics are highly prized and many consider them very useful, especially police and hunters who need help to track down others. A psychic will more often than not hide their power from those around them and try to appear as normal as possible. This is because there is talk of government agents taking self-proclaimed "psychics" into custody. Being a psychic is rare and with the advancements in the science world, it is becoming easier to track down who has the gene, but much of the progress is halted by activists. Psychics are very often mistaken for being witches because of their abilities, but a witch will never be a psychic. Being a psychic is not known to be hereditary and research is being done to find some connection. In GameThere will most likely be only one of each of these because it isn't that common of a gene mutation, especially for pyrokinesis and telepaths. Psychics who come to Ashwood are usually sponsored by a vampire, witch, or shifter family to help them adjust and hopefully become one day useful to them (though the psychic isn't aware of their true intentions). All psychics in the game are scholarship. |
Hunters
Hunters are basically groups, usually families, and their purpose is to protect the humans by ridding the world of supernatural creatures that prey upon them. Hunters are both villains and heroes, portrayed as both throughout history and even today they are often misinterpreted. It isn't all romance and glamour, and hunters tend to be very hard and cold people. Your chances of being in a romantic relationship with a vampire or shapeshifter is pretty much zilch. Like the creatures they hunt they need to be on watch all the time, many of the hunters are accused of being paranoid schizophrenic.
It is a generally acceptable practice to hunt shapeshifters and vampires, since they tend to be more aggressive. Witch hunting is no longer accepted these days and the only time it is allowed is if the harm done to humans is the work of an actual witch and not any of the others. Hunters will often seek the help of witches, which is part of the reason why witch hunting is all but illegal.
Hunter FamiliesHunter families specialize in hunting one specific group each (it's very rare they will hunt more than one). The following are the three main families and what they hunt. Each family has their own set of rules and protocol as to how they hunt, what they hunt, and who is allowed to hunt.
Hunters will and will always be a threat to vampires and shapeshifters; it doesn't matter which family you're from. In the game and in the world this takes place, Hunters need to keep anonymity about them, especially particular families.
The Van Helsing FamilyThe Van Helsing family is the oldest known vampire hunting family. They haven't always been known as Van Helsing, but it is by that name they are known to most. They are the most hated of all families because they are the most ruthless. They are particularly cruel to vampires and the family will put them through very nightmarish torture to extract information, then they will kill them without thinking twice. If you're born a Van Helsing, you ARE a vampire hunter, even if you're not a very good one. It's the family business and so that's what you do. They are literally trained from the time they learn how to walk on how to fight vampires. Vampires absolutely loathe the Van Helsings and will team up with whomever to kill even one. In turn, vampires are absolutely terrified of the Van Helsings. Van Helsings do not use that last name anymore, due to the fact that it became a little too well known. Even if you aren't a one of them either, if you happen to take very extreme measures against vampires, you will be compared to one. And that's not a compliment.
The family are based out of Europe though many came to the America after the first wave of vampires moved over. Bernd Fleischer, a very traditional and old world sort of man, currently leads them. He resides somewhere Europe, nobody is sure where, and basically what he says is law. He is the oldest of the original line of Van Helsings but that does not make him weak. He is a strong intimidating man who rules with an iron fist over family affairs. What he says goes.
Van Helsing history goes back far into time, before the Romans or Greeks, about the time of the first Egyptians is the earliest recordings of them. They worked under the early rulers as personal guard to protect them. Through the years, particularly during the time of the Greeks, the family started to spread out, taking on a more aggressive nature as well. Some family members would break off into their own clan, disagreeing with the extreme violence and they are now known as the Bellmont Hunters.
The Bellmont FamilyA little more humane, the Bellmont Hunters will only hunt vampires that change humans illegally or present a serious risk to the human population. They are a broken branch from the Van Helsing family during the Dark Ages due to disagreements on policies on what they hunt. Unlike the Van Helsings, they go through very thorough investigations as to what exactly the vampire is doing and if what they are doing can be defined as an actual crime against humanity. Where the Van Helsings kill all vampires, the Bellmonts kill only the ones that are actually dangerous.
The Bellmont family is known for breaking away from the Van Helsings because they only wished to hunt vampires that were an actual threat so they are less likely to be hunted themselves. They will actually work with other vampires to track down whoever is responsible for the crimes; many actually have positions within the justice system. They are not as heavily trained and not all the people in the family are hunters, only those who choose to be. The one family rule is to never get emotionally involved with a vampire, because you may end up having to kill it one day. They are not as large as the Van Helsing family, and are strongly based in the Americas and East Asia. There is no set leader standing today, only a council which meets once a year to discuss any issues or policy changes that are needed.
The Grimm "Family"No real relation to the brothers Grimm, this family of hunters specializes in that of shapeshifters. Much like the Bellmonts they only hunt the ones that are dangerous, but unlike the Bellmonts, they do not use legal outlets as a way to get information. They spy and sneak around for information, and have been known one or twice to kill witches. They are a make shift group and anyone can be "adopted" into the family, as long as they remain loyal to it. They are a much smaller group and based more in New England than anywhere else.
The Grimm Hunters this day are not as active as they have been in days past since shape shifters are no longer considered violent or wild. A man who calls himself Garreth leads them now but very few Grimm are still around.
Hunters in GameThere won't be a lot of hunters in the game, probably one or two from each family, and since where the game takes place is more of the Bellmont's territory, there is more or less like more of them. Hunters need to keep their true intentions as well as identities hidden. Van Helsings don't really "reside" in any town in particular, many of them travel a lot of the time, so whoever will play the ONE Van Helsing (two would be a little much) will not be familiar with the area. All supernatural creatures generally dislike hunters, though some families are tolerated more than others are.
Remember to take a good look at the family history before you make a character that is a hunter. This is extremely important because some families will restrict your character's personality more thanothers.
Racial Relations
Unless you're a hunter or you're a telepath, you have absolutely no idea that vampires, witches, and shapeshifters even exist. Ever since the "Burning Times" also known to us as when the witch trials were taking place, everyone that isn't a regular human has done their best to be completely hidden. They live among humans, but they are desperate to blend in so that another inquisition of sorts won't take place. Humans don't have a clue half the time, and are kept ignorant for their protection as well as the protection of other species. By the Night Worlders, humans are good for food and slaves...for the most part.
In Game
In general, the humans here are treated a little better, but for the most part are outsiders. If you're a supernatural creature, it almost automatically gets you in with the cool crowd, which leaves a lot of other people confused. The younger generations of the Night Worlders are either ready to cooperate with humans and live together in peace or some are tired of hiding what they are and demand that the humans serve in their rightful place, as their slaves.
