The Ash Wood

When people refer to "The Ash Wood" they're talking about the oversized tree that sits as the center between Winthrop and the school. It marks the halfway point in between the two and it is called the "Ash Wood" not because it is an Ash tree, but the bark is a rich brown color and there is a strange gray dust on it that many say looks like it's covered in Ash. The tree is the tallest and from Big Blue you can point it out because it has no leaves and it never has. It is still alive because new branches continue to grow, but for whatever reason it won't grow leaves.

The Pits

These are basically fire pits situated near the beach where students will sometimes throw parties and have bonfires. It is a series of holes dug deep in the ground and surrounded by rock. They are near the beach because in the spring it gets very nice out and some students wish to go there and enjoy the weather. However as evening comes it gets chilly so they use the bonfires to keep themselves warm. This is actually a little farther than the school but there is a makeshift path that leads there.

The Dark

When people say that "The Dark" scares them, they're talking about a piece of forest that sits near the Ash Wood. It's dark and sinister looking, many of the trees having a very dark bark color, almost black with twisted branches and giving off an bad vibe. Urban legends include the ghost of a murderer haunting that part of the woods or a coven of dead witches hunting for revenge. Eitherway, it's not an area you want to stop and hang out in.

The Point

Every school has a make out place and this one is located higher on Big Blue and looks out over Winthrop at night. It's a quiet place and on weekend evenings there is usually a car or two situated there. You can see what is up at the point, since it is well shaded by trees, but from there you can see a lot of the island.

The Fountain

Right before you get to the school there is a large fountain built that no longer operates. It is surrounded by collesium like structures that are half broken down and covered in ivy. It's a very quiet place and strangely serene considering it sits directly next to the Dark. The structures cover a lot of the area before hitting the thick forest that surrounds the school campus. There are empty tombs that guys usually bring girls to so they can scare them.

The Graveyard

On the outskirts of Winthrop sits the graveyard which is next to an old Protestant church. People are still buried there today but there are a lot of old tombs as well and graves dating back as far back as 1698, when the first settlers of Winthrop came. Where it creeps some out it is peaceful to others and though it's not a normal "hang out" place for people, it is something to behold since many of the old graves have some elaborate designs.
