ASHWOOD ACADEMY > SCHOOL BUILDINGS

You're going to want to pay attention here because your characters will be moving in and around these buildings. I have created a map for you to reference to, though not everything is really to "scale" persay, but just so you can see the layout of the campus. It is a LARGE campus, as far as where everything is but all the necessary buildings are very close to each other. Students don't have trouble making it to and from class.

Main Office

One of the most highly secured buildings on campus, the main office is where the student records as well as personal information is held. This information is kept on paper inside the basement that sits three stories below ground. The papers discuss what species the students & faculty are as well as personal history and other highly confidential information. The only people with access to this is school administration and it uses a high tech security system which makes breaking into Fort Knox look like a cake walk. The main building is where the principal's office is located as well as other school administration. It is two floors and very sleek in apperance on the inside. A large chandelier hangs at the entrance and sculptures that can date back to the time of the Greeks decorate the halls. The only time students come in is when they are either in trouble or if they need to speak with a student counselor.

Sir Willaby Ashwood Library

A massive library with books older than the school and even Winthrop, it contains many first prints of old books, as well as the newest information available. The library is mostly reference books for students to use in their studies but there are computers with internet access and printers attached who do not have a laptop and wish to use the internet for research. The library has a musty old feeling to it, the scent of books fills the air and the "restricted" section is reserved for select students, this section contains books on vampire, shapeshifter and witch history and journals as well. There are sections for leisure reading but it's mostly classic books. The school is trying to include more modern books of interest but are very selective of them. The library is a good place to find some solitude or get some peace and quiet. It's not hard to get lost in there but the librarians as well as others who work there are usually walking around.

Gymnasium

An Olympic size pool, a full basketball court, and an indoor field for rainy days make up the majority of the gymnasium. It is fulled equipped for all sorts of sports, but mostly traditional ones like soccer, polo, tennis, and rugby. There are lockers which are split by gender on opposite sides of the buildling and the offices for the Physical Education teachers sit near the main entrance. There are various exits, one leading to the tennis courts that sit outside the school, another to face the open field and various emergency ones. This is one of the newer buildlings which was constructed in the 1950's and the floor is redone every year to keep it in excellent condition. The pool is open to students all year round but it can only be used for leisure before and after school hours. The infirmary is part of the first floor and has access to all the rooms, it is large with several beds and always fully stocked.

Sports Field

The sports field sits to the south of the Gymnasium. It is a massive stretch of earth with three full fields for sports to be played on. There are bleachers that seperate the fields and a large track that makes the circumference. The field is well taken care of, freshly mowed weekly and the paint always looks in peak condition. Various sports use the fields but for football season the one closest to the gymnasium is used. It is well lit and the lights only go on during sports events. Standing near each set of bleachers are small snack huts which are restocked a few hours before came time. Otherwise they are empty.

Cafeteria

The cafeteria is huge because all the students and teachers have breakfast, lunch (after fourth period), and dinners at the same time. The building has a high celing as well as a fully stocked kitchen which offers better than average school food and on special days offers even more fanciful meals. Cafeteria meals are part of tuition though if students want anything extra they have a seperate escrow account which they can use. Food is received by waiting in line and scanning a small card stating which shows that the students have eaten. If a student is not scanning their card regularly then a school counselor will investigate to make sure they are not starving themselves. Each species is accomodated with special "juice boxes" for the vampires and "burgers" for the shapeshifters. The food is monitored carefully to make sure students receive what they are supposed to. Outside the cafeteria there are picnic tables for nicer weather so the students can enjoy it.

Poole Lecture Hall

The first of the the three lecture halls, this building is reserved for Mathematics and Sciences. It is named after Henry Poole who donated a good deal of money to having the lecture halls built. The buildling is five stories high, the first story consists mostly of elevators that were installed much later than the buildings construction. Bulletin boards that state any clubs that are specifically related to the subjects sit on the wall with any announcements that need to be done. There is one basement which is the boiler room but the only techinical workers are allowed there. The first two floors are made up of three large lecture rooms. Though the actual classes are small, the rooms are large in case of an emergency where all the students in the building need to be rounded up. One room is particularly larger than the other two and sits across the hallway from the other two rooms. The forth and fifth floors are the science labs with small work stations placed around the room for experiements or just note taking. Each floor has it's own closet where the chemicals are kept under lock and key. The only people with access are the science teachers and administration. There is a fire extinguisher at every desk (just in case) and various emergency exits routes.

The second of the the three lecture halls, this building is reserved for English, Foreign Lanuages, History and Social Science. Named after the Harman family who first suggested the idea of Ashwood Academy. The second floor is dedicated to the English department with various classrooms as well as the offices of the actual teachers sitting at the opposite side of the hall from the elevators. The third floor is for Foreign Language classes, following the same pattern as the English floor. The forth floor is for History courses, the fifth for Social Sciences. These too have the same format as the English floor.

Drache Lecture Hall

The third of the the three lecture halls, this building is reserved for Music, Art, Home Economics and any extra classes. The building was named in honor of the Drache family at request of various citizens of Winthrop. The second floor is for any micellaneous classes like SAT Prep or Programming (the room for that is filled with computers). Third floor is for Art classes, three studios are set up there with large windows that allow a lot of natural light to fill the rooms. The forth floor is made of two rooms, both of a large size. Both are music rooms equipped with extra instruments for students who don't have them and a piano. One is strictly for choir, the other for the orchestra class. These classrooms are not used often which is why they sit almost the top floor. The fifth floor is for the cooking classes and like the science class has small stations though instead of science equipment, each station is stocked with various cooking tools. There are various emergency exits as well as a large staircase just like all the other buildings have in case the elevators break down.
